Preaching & the Internet by Jude Chua Soo Meng |
|
PREACHING IS CENTRAL TO THE DOMINICAN VOCATION, as is evident not only from the name of the order, the Order of Preachers, but in the intention of St. Dominics founding of the order: to preach against heresy.
But whether one be a Dominican, the injunction to preach is given to all persons. In what follows, I hope encourage the possibilities of using the internet as a tool for preaching. I think non-Dominicans can equally draw inspiration from the preaching charism and motives of the Order of Preachers. Today, the audience of our preaching extends to all of humanity, because through the various kinds of technological communication devises, we are able to reach other people without having to be physically present to them. Preach Out Why do I say that we must reach all humanity? I say that because that is to fulfill the genius of St. Dominic when he conceived of an order of itinerant preachers, who instead of living cloistered in monasteries, moved out to reach as many as they could. The internet enables us to do just that: to write mails to friends, to encourage in chat rooms, to inspire with gospel values and to challenge the spirit of the world through online sites and publications, and best of all, to witness to the existence of a people committed to the truths and liberating values of the Gospel, which lead to a more fulfilling life for those trapped in meaningless materialistic pursuits. |
