| The Sexual Revelation by Fr. David García O.P. (Contd) |

When we treat the other person as an object of pleasure and not as a subject of respect and love, the sexual faculty becomes a lie as we betray our most authentic purpose. Pope John Paul II did not draw new conclusions but he got the message across in the modern context. In my experience, the Theology of the Body is better received by lay people in dire need of a consistent system to help them understand their experience, rather than the clergy who may see nothing new in it. Lets hear from some of these people… John, who is involved with the Marriage Preparation Course, said: The Theology of the Body has helped [my wife and I] reach out to our engaged couples more easily and effectively as we share with them the richness of Natural Family Planning where the language of the Body is proclaimed in a way that enables us to participate in the very life and love of the Holy Trinity.Josephine Teo, from the parish of Christ the King, shared: My husband, being a typical man read FHM, Maxim and occasionally watched pornography, lusting after sexy women. This hurt me so badly that I actually initiated a divorce. My husband then promised to change and began his efforts of untangling himself from this web of lust. We attended a series of Theology of the Body sessions organized by Family Life Society. The talk really changed our perspective about dignity and worth of a human person regardless of male or female and slowly, we began to understand what God’s plan was for our sexual desires, and how lust totally distorts the relationship between husband and wife. My husband gave his testimony in front of our ministry in Church, how he was exposed to sexual immoralities in his life and the struggles he went through to overcome it. Many men were inspired by his truthful confession and testimony and I forgave him seeing his efforts to change.Louise Macul, from the parish of the Holy Family, said: The Popes message has helped me to forgive and heal very deep wounds experienced in adolescence, early adulthood, and recently with my estranged husband who suffers a sexual addiction. I now have the deepest respect for my own sexuality and who I am as a person.Yohannes Iwan, from the parish of St Mary of the Angels, said: As a young person, the realisation that sexuality is the key to discovering Gods plan for our salvation and for eternal life was just mind-blowing. Sexuality, being male and female, is not taboo or unholy but it is actually God revealing himself through our bodies. I am really keen to discover ways the message of Pope John Paul II can take root in the hearts of our youth because they are our future parents, husbands and wives. Numerous future families can be saved if our youth embrace and understand the great dignity of sexuality and marriage.Indeed, what Pope John Paul II has done is to offer the contents of the teaching of the Church not as a heavy burden to be carried but as a light that illuminates the human journey and gives meaning to a life lived to the full.
