How to be a Catholic Writer by Diana Tan Illustrations by jeftan6@mac.com |

I am not a professional Catholic writer. Well, not yet, anyway. At the moment, I write on a freelance basis and I have had some articles published in Catholic magazines such as the now defunct New Covenant (a Catholic spirituality magazine published in the United States) and Waypoint (a local Catholic magazine). It is my desire to write for Christian publications. Why?, you ask. Simply because I want to share my God-experiences and stories with you.
How I got started
When my writing passion got fired up three years ago, I went on the net and found some good resources for beginning writers. I read books, magazines and online articles on writing. An e-book that I found inspiring was Women on WritingFrom Inspiration to Publication. Knowledge is alive and I am still learning the ropes and honing my skill. My first paid secular articles appeared in local parenting magazines. But my heart is in making God known. Following the ideas I had gathered from my research, I began to look for Christian publishers. I was elated when New Covenant accepted my 1,000-word article at my first attempt. At that time I did not care how much I would be paid. I danced with joy when I saw my byline in a foreign magazine. When the payment arrived, I photocopied the US$200 cheque! Why do I submit my spiritual articles to overseas markets? Simply because the paid writing market in Singapore for freelancers is very small. So I cast a wider net. I am not limiting my writing to Catholic publications. I am beginning to approach Protestant publications as well. There are many non-denominational and ecumenical Christian publications and as long as articles are Christian in nature they stand a chance of being accepted. |
